Minimum wage increases can lead to wage reductions by imperfectly competitive firms
In a model with imperfect competition and multiple equilibria we show how an increase in the minimum wage can lead firms to reduce wages (and employment). We find some empirical support for this in the Card–Krueger minimum wage data.
متن کاملOptimal Minimum Wage in Competitive Labor Markets∗
This paper presents a theoretical analysis of optimal minimum wage policy in a perfectly competitive labor market. Introducing a minimum wage is desirable if the government values redistribution toward low wage workers. This result remains true in the presence of optimal nonlinear taxes and transfers. In that context, a minimum wage effectively rations low skilled labor which is subsidized by t...
متن کاملWage Inequality, Minimum Wage Effects and Spillovers
This paper investigates possible spillover effects of the UK minimum wage. The halt in the growth in inequality in the lower half of the wage distribution (as measured by the 50:10 percentile ratio) since the mid 1990s, in contrast to the continued inequality growth in the upper half of the distribution, suggests the possibility of a minimum wage effect and spillover effects on wages above the ...
متن کاملThe Spending and Debt Responses to Minimum Wage Increases;
This paper presents evidence that spending increases more than income, and thus debt rises, in households with minimum wage workers following a minimum wage hike. Furthermore, we show that the size, timing, persistence, and composition of spending is inconsistent with the basic certainty equivalent life cycle model as well as simple “rule of thumb” models where consumption is equal to a fractio...
متن کاملStagnation and minimum wage: Optimal minimum wage policy in macroeconomics
This paper argues how an increase in minimum wage affects employment, consumption, and social welfare with dynamic general equilibrium model without market frictions. The study demonstrates that a minimum wage hike reduces an actual unemployment rate and has positive effects on an employment rate under the demand-shortage economy whereas they do not under a non-demand shortage economy. The stud...
